Educator Portfolio

Jewel E. Sanchez
I grew up in East Oakland, California, and the city's rich history of activism and community engagement has deeply shaped my values. After completing my degree in English Education at California State University, Chico, I embarked on a teaching journey. Recently, I earned my master's degree in Urban Education and Social Justice from the University of San Francisco, with a specific focus on secondary education. Additionally, I obtained a teaching credential for teaching English at the secondary level.
As a dedicated social justice educator, my teaching philosophy revolves around creating a curriculum that acknowledges and respects the diverse lived experiences of my students. I strive to empower my students' voices and foster an environment that values empathetic listening. I firmly believe that some of our most meaningful learning moments occur when we connect our personal backgrounds to our educational objectives.
In my approach to teaching, I view language and literature as powerful tools for interpreting and translating the world around us. I encourage my students to develop their own frames of reference (schemas) and utilize their academic knowledge as transferable skills in their communities. My teaching extends beyond the confines of the classroom, as I aim to learn alongside my students, engaging with them in a dynamic educational journey.
